World Heart Day 2025: A Message from Dr. Bhasker

Semitha, CVTS Surgeon

Healing Hearts, Building Hope

Each year, World Heart Day reminds us that our hearts—though small in size—are central to our existence. As a Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, I have witnessed firsthand the strength of the human heart and the resilience of the people who fight to protect it.

On this day, I want to share not only insights from the operating room but also a heartfelt message: Your heart matters. Take care of it.

Why World Heart Day Matters

World Heart Day, observed every September 29, is a global initiative by the World Heart Federation to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease (CVD)—the world’s leading cause of death.

Despite advances in medicine and technology, heart disease continues to claim millions of lives each year—most of them preventable.

In my practice, I often see patients who arrive after years of ignoring early warning signs. My message today is simple: Don’t wait until it’s too late. Prevention is your first surgery.

The Modern Heart: A Global Crisis

  • 17.9 million people die each year from CVD.
  • Over 75% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • Lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, and unmanaged stress play a significant role.

This is not just a healthcare problem. It’s a societal challenge—one that calls for action from individuals, communities, and policymakers alike.

My Work, My Mission

As a CVTS surgeon, I operate on some of the most complex and delicate structures in the human body: the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. Whether it’s performing a coronary artery bypass, valve replacement, or complex thoracic surgery, the goal remains the same: to give life a second chance.

But my mission goes beyond the surgical table. I believe in educating, empowering, and equipping people with the tools they need to prevent heart disease in the first place.

5 Heart-Healthy Habits I Recommend

  1. Know Your Numbers
Track your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Early detection saves lives.
  2. Eat for Your Heart
Include more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats. Reduce salt and sugar.
  3. Stay Active
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity daily. Even walking counts.
  4. Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol
There’s no safe level of tobacco. And moderation is key when it comes to alcohol.
  5. Manage Stress
Yoga, meditation, or simply time with family can help reduce stress—a silent enemy of the heart.

This World Heart Day, Take a Pledge

Let’s move from awareness to action. Take one small step today to protect your heart:

  • Book a health check-up.
  • Start a 10-minute walk.
  • Share this message with a loved one.

Your heart has been beating tirelessly since the moment you were born. On this World Heart Day, honor it by making healthier choices—because every heartbeat matters.
